$150 Visa Gift Card - How to be a 10 - CLOSED

Random.org winner selected -- Detroit Runner --Proof that men can win!!

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and The Laughing Cow.

When it comes to the holidays, it’s like food has grown legs and taken to walking around on it’s own! Buckets of popcorn, baskets of chocolates and a bakers dozen of pies and cupcakes seem to magically appear at the office… in your house…at every party you attend. Americans may talk recession but we eat like kings during the holiday season.

I am the first to tell you that I enjoy a daily treat, so I’m not saying we shouldn’t enjoy this abundance, but if we are truly honest with ourselves much of the food we encounter may have walked in off a bad street corner and really isn’t worth eating. And if the food isn’t amazing to eat and isn’t amazing for the waistline…then why do we keep eating it?!

HOW TO BE A 10
I’m making it a goal to enjoy the holidays by having my favorite foods and some of those that are new to me but look AMAZING. So how am I defining what treats to enjoy?

Those that on a scale of 1-10 are a 10 will make the cut for pure enjoyment.

Pure enjoyment means SLOWING DOWN. If I am going to have a piece of cheesecake, then I want to taste it.

I will put my fork down between bites and let that taste just fill my mouth…surprisingly this often means we need LESS of that decadent food.

If I try something finding out it’s not a 10, then I’m going to put it down. I gotta save room for the once a year freezer box cookies and homemade stuffing from my mom...salivating as I even consider them!

What foods rank a 10 for you and are worth every bite?? Can you put down foods that end up not being so great or do you feel compelled to finish them? Do you eat things just to not hurt others feelings?

Share your thoughts for a chance to win a $150 Visa Gift Card from BlogHer and The Daily Does of Well-Being!! Entries accepted 12/8-12/28. There are up to 17 other bloggers participating that give you chances to win as well!!

Alright Amanda. For me it would be a small piece of Organic 85% Cacao Dark Chocolate with a glass of wine (Organic 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon). Enjoying this moment on a cool evening over an outdoor fireplace with my wife overlooking the ocean.

If were are going to indulge lets not indulge with just a food, indulge in the full experience.

Merry Christmas!!!

Cheers,
Armando

(*Note: It isn't happening this Christmas - my wife is pregnant which far more exciting anyways =0)

The food that ranks a 10 for me is my future mother in laws cheesy potatoes. They are so good! I always bring home left overs after she makes them!

JenniferLeah said...

gotta laugh at the post about cheesy potatos...because that is my "10" food!!
I make a potato dish that is mashed potatos with cream cheese, sour cream, cheddar cheese, garlic and green onions. Then baked.
Not.TOO.Healthy.
Heart.stopping.amount.of.calories!!

But I will indulge a bit-we only have them once a year. They are so rich a little bit will do for me. The leftovers will go home with my parents :)

Love your tips. I have been using the SLOW method lately at all meals. Some days everything is just so rushed.

Great tips!!

I am REALLY trying to pick my indulgences this season carefully. Yes, we should certainly treat ourselve.s.. but that doesn't mean eating everything in sight!

I am going to be more selective and stick to the 10's!

Katie said...

Homemade chocolate chip cookies
A REALLY good cupcake with peanutbutter frosting
Pioneer Woman's Mashed Potatoes ;)

marathonmaiden said...

hmmmmm currently the food that ranks a 10 is, well it's not a food, but beer. post-race i've just had an intense craving for beer. although if i had to pick a food i'd say reece's pb cups. yum

Amanda said...

Pumpkin pie is a 10 for me, especially one made with eggs because my son has an egg allergy. I've made it my mission to make all that I consider a 10, still be a 10 in it's healthier version.

Heather said...

We have something different for dinner every year, so I never know what is going to be good enough to splurge on.
I can always count on Rolo Cookies though! Looking forward to baking some up this weekend.

Nobel4Lit said...

That's a toughie, because you're right... not everything is a "10," yet there they go down the hatch anyway.

I think my mom's xiong xi (Chinese tamale-like) thing is a "10." You don't need very much of it to become full, and I really consider it a special treat that's only made for holidays!

Lisa Eirene said...

That's a great way to put it....not everything is a "10"...

I'd say -cheesecake is a 10 and worth every bite. So are lemon squares. :)

What a great giveaway!

Pam said...

I try to be smart about the way food is prepared. I looooooove sweet potato casserole. Or at least I thought I did. It turns out it's not the casserole I like. It's the main ingredient! I'm just as happy with a plain ol' baked sweet potato sprinkled with cinnamon as I am with the creamy potatoes laden with butter, sugar, and marshmallows.

Also, if your family has a huge Christmas feast, suggest an alternative. That's what someone in my family did a few years ago. When they voiced their opinion everyone jumped on it with a big fat YES! Everyone was sick of food but no one wanted to be the first to suggest changing anything. Now we have a new Christmas tradition of CHILI! No turkey, dressing, casserole, etc. Just CHILI! So much healthier and so much easier to clean up so you can spend more time enjoying other more fun Christmasy stuff!

Jess said...

My 10 would be my mom's apple pie. I never make it at home, so it's a treat to get it when I visit.

Alecia said...

For me, Dove dark chocolate is a 10. So is cheesecake, that cookie monster dessert at Cheddar's, and Haagan Dazs coffee flavored ice cream!

Julie said...

My 10 is my husbands bananas foster. Served over ice cream. Delicious you have to enjoy each bite.

Callie said...

My mom's apple pie is a 10.

And I so wish that I would not eat everything that fell below a 10--it is a great rule to live by but I worry about hurting people's feelings (especially in-laws)

Jess said...

My 10 is a homemade chocolate and peanut butter treat. It could be buckeye balls, or peanut butter pie, but it's got to be homemade

I LOVE this idea! I am going to try this out at our company's holiday party on Friday. If I try a food and it turns out not to be a 10, I'm putting it down! For me, chocolate chip cookies are a 10, Ben and Jerry's mint chocolate cookie ice cream is a 10! Hot fudge pudding cake is a 10! And peanut butter filled pretzels too!

Stephanie Anne said...

a delicious piece of tiramisu is a 10 for me!

Honestly, it is hard for me to rank food. I guess I can always go for chocolate, but most of the time I have to sit back and listen to what I crave, what my body needs. I love hot oatmeal after a cold run, an icecream cone in the summer, eggs in the morning...I don't have any diet no nos, or rules about eating. I naturally tend to crave healthy foods..

OMG! Chocolate-Raspberry Cheesecake would be my 10, but even if I ate slowly, I wouldn't be able to stop! My brain would say enough, but my mouth would just ask for more! lol!

Other treats - if they're not chocolate, I can easily dismiss them entirely! Anything chocolate requires at least some consideration. I"m getting better though, other than that cheesecake!

I wish I were more of a foodie so I'd have a better answer to this question...

I'm going to go with my dad's chocolate chip pancakes (though I must confess I've done a mean adaptation of his recipe to make pumpkin/cinnamon/chocolate chip pancakes) topped with homemade applesauce. Mmmm...

marie said...

Dark chocolate is worth every single calorie to me.

Shelley said...

I've always been a picky eater, so it's never a problem to not finish something if I don't really like it. I DO try and choose something homemade for a treat, and for sweets, I adore chocolate crinkle cookies. Crispy AND chewy - best of both worlds!

I feel like I've been treating every food as a 10 lately, but it means I get to run ultras then, right?

I'd have to say that #1 10 would be wrapped chocolates - I never regret those, and it's easy enough to stop at just 1 or 2!

Tanya Patrice said...

Hmm - I would say a 10 for me is chips & salsa - worth every last crunch!

Lisa said...

Great post. I never really thought of food that way. I'm not sure what my 10 food would be. I think my 10 dessert is a well done creme brulee. But my mom's "potatoes romanoff" with sourcream, cheese and green onions is up there as well.

Eating during the holidays is not easy sometimes. To stay healthy I always eat a small meal before I go so I don’t feel like I have to pack it on at the party. I would rather do that and have everyone say how svelt I look instead of hiding the pie when I walk in. Happy Holidays.

Kelly said...

Luckily for me, sweets aren't much of a temptation. I like them and all, but a tiny bit goes a long way for me. So it's easy for me to politely turn away someone else's sweet treats by honestly saying that I don't care for one.

As far as what ranks at a 10... it would be savory things, like potatoes (of any kind), meatballs, etc. But I've gotten very good at portion control over the last year and find it easy to take a couple bites and move along.

Oh gosh, I am always eating things I don't really want because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I'm on WW but people still offer me soooo much food during the holidays and I just can't say no!

For me it is the homemade Caesar salad made by my future sister-in-law (who ironically has the same first and middle name as myself). She even makes homemade croutons. I seriously can not get enough of this salad!

Good Marzipan chocolate and good cheesecake are definite 10's in my book. I don't do very well tho at resisting the 'not 10's'... Thank goodness I don't work in an office. I'm at home and try not to bring much not so good for me food in. That helps.

I'm not much of a sweets eater but I did eat some of my mother-in-law's fudge at the family party so as not to hurt her feelings.
Now, give me anything cheese and I will wolf it right down.

I wish I could eat certain foods to make others happy but due to health reasons I cannot. Even when I explain this to people they appear hurt and resentment towards me has kicked in. This subject is very close to my heart and it truly grieves me that when people wont listen to the truth about health reasons for not being able to eat certian foods it puts Division between families.

I can't avoid sweets especially during the holidays, but I try not to eat too much of them. I do however feel bad if someone sees me not finishing my food.

Susan E. said...

Some of my 10s are filet mignon, fresh veggies & fruit, marzipan and cheesecake. I've gotten much better over the last few years at not finishing foods that aren't so great. It's still sometimes hard to turn down a food pusher, but I'm getting better at that too.

I take smaller portions of items...only what I'll finish, but I do try to try a little bit of everything. However, I am a bit picky, so I won't take something that is unappealing, just to be polite.

I hate seeming not to like my host's foods, but I don't finish something I don't like. As for a food worth every bite, for me it's fudgy walnut brownies. I couldn't leave a good brownie like that alone for anything.

The foods that rank a 10 for me would be chocolate truffles, white chocolate cheesecake, and bread pudding. I do often feel compelled to finish foods that aren't the best, but only if I'm in the company of others, and of course I will finish someone else's dishes even if I don't like them, just to avoid hurting the cook's feelings.

Thanks!

Definitely baked goods are high on my list - especially homemade chocolate chip cookies that are soft and gooey. I have learned to put down things I am not enjoying - and if it might hurt someone's feelings, I just don't let them see me. It's hard, but I know that it has to be done!
